George Frederic Watts

George Frederic Watts

(1817-1904)

(b London, 23 Feb 1817; d London, 1 July 1904).

English painter and sculptor. Though renowned as one of the great portrait painters of the later Victorian era, he saw himself as part of the tradition of history painting. His imaginative subject paintings evolved into ‘symbolical’ works on which he intended his future reputation to rest.
