(b London, 23 Feb 1817; d London, 1 July 1904).
English
painter and sculptor. Though renowned as one of the great portrait
painters of the later Victorian era, he saw himself as part of the
tradition of history painting. His imaginative subject paintings evolved
into ‘symbolical’ works (see fig.) on which he intended his future
reputation to rest.
