MASTER of the St. Bartholomew Altar
( fl Cologne, c. 1470–1510).
Painter and illuminator, active in
Germany. Although he established himself as one of the leading painters in
Cologne, he also had links with Gelderland, Arnhem and Utrecht, and his style
shows considerable Netherlandish influences. This has led many scholars to
speculate that he originally came from the eastern Netherlands. His small oeuvre
consists predominantly of religious panel paintings, although some portraits
have also been attributed to him.
