Nickname of Giovanni
Battista Gaulli (1639-1709), one of the finest
Italian Baroque portrait painters and
decorators. His style was influenced by Rubens
and Van Dyck. Working in Rome, where he was a
friend of Bernini, he produced masterpieces of
illusionist decorative work, notably the ceiling
of the church of II Gesu (1668-83).
