(b Rome, 1605; d Rome, 1650). Italian painter
and sculptor. In documents he is referred to as del Modello
(deriving from the name of the street in Rome in which he was
living, the Vicolo dei Modelli). Baldini is presumed to be the same
person as the sculptor Paolo Naldini, whose biography by Pascoli
presents him as beginning his career with painting, as a pupil in
Rome of Andrea Sacchi, before turning to sculpture later at the
suggestion of his friend Carlo Maratti. Pascoli gave a list of
sculptures by Naldini. The existing data on the painter and the
sculptor coincide in such a way as to convince scholars of the
artist’s activity in both fields, which was not unusual in the 17th
century.
