(b Udine, 5 Sept 1939). Italian painter. He began his experiments in
visual perception and psychology in the late 1950s. In this economic
boom period there was considerable collaboration between artistic
research and industrial production, to which Alviani contributed. In
1959–60 he created his Surfaces with Vibratory Texture, metallic
planes with modular incisions that create an illusion of constantly
changing distances, depending on the angle from which they are
viewed and the way in which the light strikes them. In 1961 he
collaborated in serial production of plastic objects, and between
1962 and 1964 he participated in the exhibitions of arte programmata
promoted by Olivetti in Venice, Rome, Trieste, Düsseldorf and
London. In the 1960s he also took part in the Nouvelle tendance
movement. In 1965 Alviani’s work began to display a greater interest
in spatial articulation (e.g. Surface with Vibratory Texture;
Wuppertal, von der Heydt-Mus.). In a kindergarten in Pregelstrasse
in Leverkusen he created a reflective aluminium wall (two Aluminium
Plates, each 1*1 m, 1965) to convey a feeling of optical vibration,
and in 1967 he repeated the experiment in the hall of the palace
housing the Festival del Cinema in Venice. Comparisons with
architecture gradually became increasingly important, not only
through the multiplication of standard modular elements, but with
the creation of mirrored structures, which were curved or rotated to
create particular perceptual and environmental effects.
